Company Profile
Metalico is a leading full-service, broadly diversified scrap metal recycler, principally operating in the Northeastern United States. Our scrap operations source, buy, process, and sell four distinct groups of commodity metals for use in the manufacture of new products:
We recycle scrap steel and iron, which is sold primarily to domestic mills and foundries.
We recycle non-ferrous metals, principally aluminum, copper, lead, and nickel-based steel and high temperature alloys. These products are sold to domestic manufacturers and, to a lesser extent, to the export markets.
We buy catalytic converters and recover platinum, palladium, and rhodium, known as Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). These precious metals are typically refined and reused by industry in emissions control devices.
Metalico today employs over 550 people in 20+ operating locations across 6 states. Metalico is headquartered in Cranford, New Jersey.
Growth Strategy
Metalico’s strategy is to grow by acquisition, and more recently, through emphasis on organically developed internal initiatives.
Metalico executes this strategy by carefully locating platform businesses to acquire that we can leverage to increase market penetration by adding tuck-in acquisitions to enhance our competitive advantage. We then look to exploit synergies in transportation, cross-selling among operations and working to realize operating efficiencies.
We seek internal growth and expansion opportunities in contiguous geographic markets in order to maximize market share and profitability.
The Company looks to mitigate commodity price risk by diversifying across several commodity metals and through rapid turnover of its inventories. Metalico seeks to have a dominant position in the markets in which it operates, and to be the standard-bearer for customer service and quality assurance in our value-added products and commodities.
Operations
Metalico operates both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal recycling facilities in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio, serving both U.S. and Canadian markets. All forms of metal scrap are purchased from manufacturers, small scrap dealers, demolition contractors, and peddlers.
The scrap is sorted and prepared for sale to mills, furnaces and foundries. Two of our facilities, located in Syracuse, NY, and Gulfport, MS, process used catalytic converters, recycling platinum, palladium, and rhodium, known as PGMs (Platinum Group Metals).
Metalico operates three automobile shredders. Our first is located on Neville Island near the city of Pittsburgh which serves as the platform for the Southwestern Pennsylvania operations. We operate another shredder in nearby Girard, Ohio, which serves as a platform for our Ohio facilities. Our newest shredder, located in Lackawanna, New York, provides an outlet for thirteen facilities in surrounding Upstate New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania.
Metalico has earned a reputation for professionalism and trust with consumers and other large metal buyers. Mills and metal buyers know that Metalico delivers quality materials with exceptional reliability. This means that scrap suppliers can rely on Metalico to accept materials at a fair price, in both up and down markets.
Sustainability
The recycling of metals saves natural resources, energy, and consumption of scarce landfill space. Metalico scrap locations offer easy access, quick payment and fair prices to peddlers and local residents–this encourages additional recycling of metal scrap, such as siding, window frames and doors, which typically end up in landfills.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the Company’s use of renewable wind energy and named Metalico as a Green Power Partner. Metalico will continue to contribute to efforts to use renewable energy, reduce pollution and encourage recycling.
Our People
Kevin Whalen was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in April 2023. He had been Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer in June, 2012. Kevin joined the Company in July 2004 as Corporate Controller. From 2000 until that time he served as Finance Manager of Ivoice, Inc. in Matawan, New Jersey. From 1996 to 2000 Mr. Whalen served as Corporate Controller for Willcox & Gibbs in Carteret, New Jersey. Mr. Whalen is a Certified Public Accountant.
Chad Walter was appointed Chief Operating Officer in July of 2022. Prior to this appointment, starting in February of 2017, Mr. Walter was the Regional VP of Western NY. Before working for Metalico, Mr. Walter was the Plant Manager at two different publicly traded scrap metal recycling companies.
Constance Jennings was appointed Chief Financial Officer in April 2023. She had served as Corporate Controller, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. She rejoined the Company in June 2007 as Accounting Manager after leaving in May 2001 to raise a family. Mrs. Jennings was previously Corporate Controller from January 1998 through May 2001. From 1996 through 1997 Mrs. Jennings served as Corporate Controller for Eastern Environmental Services, in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. From 1994 through 1995 Mrs. Jennings was a Regional Controller for Continental Waste Industries.
David DelBianco was appointed Vice President of Business Development in August 2006. He joined the Company in April 2004 in the function of Operations and Business Development. From 2001 until that time he held the position of Controller and Vice President of PSEG Asset Management, Inc. in Newark, New Jersey. Mr. DelBianco held the position of Controller with Continental Waste Industries, Inc. in 1994, and remained with Republic Services, Inc through 2001 after the merger of those two companies in 1997. His duties at Metalico include acquisition development, operations, and information systems. Mr. DelBianco is a Certified Public Accountant.
Pete Meyers is a Director and Vice President of Ferrous Sales and Marketing. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in the scrap metal industry Mr. Meyers is responsible for all domestic and international ferrous sales for the company. Before joining Metalico he served as Vice President –Trading at Protrade Steel Co. directing the domestic scrap brokerage division. Prior to joining Protrade Pete was Vice President Trading –Eastern Region for Tube City and was responsible for all trading in the mid Atlantic and New England states as well as two operating plants. He began his career with the David J Joseph Company as a ferrous trader.
Tony Lowery was appointed Corporate IT Director in September 2018. Prior to this role, he led IT operations for Metalico’s Pittsburgh region following the company’s acquisition of The Snyder Group in 2008. Tony has been based out of the Brownsville office since 1995 and began his career with Trinity Marine Products, bringing decades of industry and technology leadership experience to Metalico. Tony leads Metalico’s IT department, overseeing the company’s enterprise infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud services, telecommunications, business applications, end-user support, and strategic technology initiatives. He works closely with executive leadership to align technology investments with the company’s operational goals while ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient IT services throughout the organization. He is committed to leveraging technology to improve operational efficiency, strengthen security, and provide innovative solutions that support Metalico’s continued growth.
Rosa Montante was appointed as Corporate Human Resources Director in 2020, after joining Metalico in September 2009. Over her tenure at Metalico, Rosa has taken on various positions, including Regional HR Director, Assistant General Manager and Logistics Manager. Prior to her role at Metalico, Rosa worked as a Market Research Consultant for Xerox Corporation, where she managed significant global market research projects that shaped strategic decisions. Her career began as Operations Manager at Jostens, where she quickly recognized the vital role of people in achieving organizational success. Rosa remains dedicated to cultivating a culture that appreciates individual contributions, promotes talent development, and boosts employee engagement in alignment with the organization’s objectives.
Glenda Wehrli serves as Vice President and Director of Environmental Compliance and Employee Safety. She oversees environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs across all Metalico facilities. With a strong background in regulatory compliance, operational safety, and workforce engagement, Glenda plays a key role in ensuring that Metalico maintains the highest standards in environmental stewardship and employee protection. Since joining Metalico in 2009, Glenda has been instrumental in developing and implementing environmental compliance programs. She has extensive experience navigating complex regulatory frameworks and represents the company in permit negotiations and interactions with local, state, and federal agencies. In her current role, Glenda leads companywide safety initiatives, drives continuous improvement in EHS performance, and partners with management to integrate safety and compliance into daily business practices. She is passionate about building a strong safety culture, enhancing employee training programs, and ensuring that environmental responsibility remains a core component of Metalico’s operations.
